Fat Cat Knits Mixed Blessings Dezember/December 2009

Ich habe eine Mitgliedschaft für 3 Monate beim Fat Cat Knits Mixed Blessing Fiber Club. Man bekommt 2 unterschiedlich gefärbte Faserstränge unterschiedlicher Zusammensetzung. Zusammen bekommt man 5 oz. = ca. 140 gr. Im Dezember habe ich eine doppelte Dosis bekommen, da ich bei einer Auslosung gewonne hatte :-) Die Farben sind erdig-herbstlich, die Zusammensetzung wirklich genial, 50% Alpaka/ 30% Merino/ 20% Seide. Die erste Packung habe ich zwischen den Jahren verarbeitet und daraus ein mitteldickes Garn gesponnen (Nd. 5-5,5 mm).

I have a 3-month-membership for the Fat Cat Knits Mixed Blessings Fiber Club. You get 2 differently dyed fiber braids in mixed fibers. Together one bundle weighs 5 oz. In December I received a double installment because I was the lucky winner in the club's drawing. The colours are earthy autumnal in really wonderful fiber combination, 50% alpaca/ 30% merino/ 20% silk. I spun the first bundle between Christmas and New Year and got a worsted yarn (needles 5-5.5 mm).

Das zweite Paket wurde eine sehr dicke Garn, nur rund 160mtr auf 140g, aber super fluffig.

Tour de Fleece 2009 - Tag/ Day 01 + 02

Hm, Tour de Fleece zusammen mit der Tour de France. Was habe ich gesponnen?

Hier zuerst einmal die Herausforderung:

Ehemals 3-farbige Merinowolle, geteilt. Es sollten so um die 150 Gramm sein.
Das Ziel: Sockengarn, Navajo gezwirnt.
Notwendig dazu: Spinne den Faden recht dünn, so ungefähr wie einen Nähzwirnfaden.

Former 3-coloured merino roving, split into its components. It should be around 150 gram.

Requirements: spin the thread quite thin, approx. as thin as sewing cotton.


Tag 01:
Ab 8 Uhr bis etwas nach 21 Uhr arbeiten auf der Gartenhütte-Baustelle. Wir habe ein Fundament gemauert. Nach mehr als 50 Sack Beton heben und herumkarren plus Steine bewegen, waren meine Arme, Hände und der Rest von mir etwas kaputt. Aber nix da, ich will nicht ins Team Lantern Rouge :-D. Noch ein Bällchen Wolle angesponnen. Es geht bei recht dünnem Garn so langsam voran.

Day 01:
From 8 till around 9 am at our garden shed construction area. We put up the fundament. After more than 50 bags of cement and a lot of bricks my arms and hands were quite tired - as the rest of my body was. But no, I do not want to be in the team Lantern Rouge :-D So I spun one ball of white roving. It is a slow progress because of the thin yarn.

Tag 02:
2 weitere Bällchen plus den Anfang eines dritten geschafft. Ich bin ja auch noch im KAL 'Socks From The Toe Up', für den ich die On-Hold Socks stricke plus arbeite ich an einem weiteren Strickrock. Da will die Zeit schon genau eingeteilt sein.

Day 02:
2 more balls plus a 3rd in progress. Additionally I am working on a sock (On-Hold Socks) for the 'Socks From The Toe Up' KAL and a skirt. Time management is necessary :-D

Versponnen / Spinning

Spinnlaune - Aufwärmübung für die Tour de Fleece. Ich nehme alles, was mir so an nicht zu großen Faserpäckchen in die Hände kommt und probiere. Navajo-zwirnen geht für meinen Geschmack ganz gut und macht Spaß, wenn man die schönen Farbverläufe sieht.

In the mood for spinning - or warm-up for the Tour de Fleece. I take every heap of fiber that is in my way and not too big. Navajo plying works wonderful and is fun, especially when seeing the outcome with the colour gradient.

Space Kammzug / Space Pencil Roving

Meine Handgelenke schmerzen, weil ich mit den falschen Nadeln zuviel knubbelige Baumwolle und Seide verstrickt habe. Aber was ist der strickende Mensch ohne Stricken??? Gut, dass ich ein Spinnrad habe :-D Nächsten Monat mache ich das erste Mal bei der Tour De Fleece mit und um in den Flow zu kommen, war das genau der Moment, um mal etwas aus dem für einen Gelegenheitspinner doch schon recht umfangreichen Vorrat zu nehmen. Space-gefärbter Kammzug (von welchem Wolltier auch immer - ist ein bisschen zu rauh für Merino). Oh Mann, verspinnt sich das gut. Ich habe 100gr., und die sind jetzt auf der Spule...das macht Hoffnung für die Tour De Fleece. Mein Ziel ist es, das erste Mal Sockengarn, Navajo-gezwirnt, herzustellen. Ich werde auch die Space-Pracht Navajo-zwirnen. Hoffentlich wird's was und die Wolle kann dann -praktischerweise- gleich in den Socks From The Toe Up-KAL wandern.

My wrists are hurting because I knitted with the wrong needles too much silk and knobbly cotton yarn. But what is a knitter without knitting??? Hmmm, good that I own a spinning wheel. Next month I am going to participate in the Tour De Fleece. And to get into the mood, it was the right moment to plunder my -for a casual spinner- not so small fiber stash. Space dyed pencil roving in rainbow colours. I do not know which fiber spending animal it is from, guess not merino because it is a little bit coarse. But wow, it spun up phenomenally. I had 100gr. of roving which is now spun up...that raises hope for my Tour De Fleece goal to spin yarn for a pair of socks for the first time and navajo-ply it (for smooth colour transitions, do not know this fractal stripes thing by now). The rainbow space-yarn I am going to navajo-ply, too. I hope it works and the yarn can enlarge my stash for the Socks From The Tow Up KAL.

Versponnene Laune / In the mood for spinning

Ich werde wohl der ewige Spinnanfänger bleiben, weil meine Zeitabstände in denen ich Wolle spinne irgendwie ziemlich lange sind. Letztes Jahr im Januar habe ich meinem Vater einen handgemachten Schal zugesagt. Also: Wolle gefärbt + gesponnen + gestrickt. Letztes Jahr irgendwann im Sommer war die Wolle fertig....dann lag sie bzw. saß auf den Spulen...und lag.... und lag. Bis Montag. Da habe ich sie dann gezwirnt. Hoffentlich ergibt das einen Schal...162 gr....keine Ahnung wieviele Meter, da ich zu faul war, die Fäden zu zählen. Ich stricke einfach bis zum Ende :-D.

I guess, I will always be a novice in spinning yarn because the time gaps between my spinning attacks seems quite long. January last year I promised my father to make him a scarf. Means fiber self dyed, self spun and self knitted. The singles were spun up sometime around summer 2008 and then...it rested... and rested...and rested. Until last Monday. I started the plying process. I hope that the end result of 162 gr. will make scarf. No clue how many meters I have because I was too lazy to count the strands on my niddy-noddy. I will knit till the last piece of yarn :-D.

Phat Fiber April - 2 Spinnproben / 2 spun up samples

Zwei Proben aus dem Phat Fiber April Paket habe ich ausprobiert, die Bambusfaser von Polyart Girl und die Puntawolle von Serendipity. Ich bin sonst nicht der Typ für grelle Grüntöne, aber die Serendipitywolle wollte einfach etwas werden. Ich habe recht dünn gesponnen, weil ich den Versuch wage, das einfädige Garn mit einer gekauften weißen Sockenwolle zu verzwirnen, in der Hoffnung, daraus ein Paar Sneakersocken machen zu können.

Two samples of the April Phat Box are in test phase ;-), the bamboo fiber by Polyart Girl and the Punta wool roving from Serendipity. Usually I am not so into flamboyant green but the Serendipity roving wanted to become something. I tried to spin quite thin because I am planning to ply the singles together with commercial white sock yarn hoping to get a pair of sneakers out of that yarn. Nice roving and the colourway although normally not my thing is kind of wonderful like fresh green grass. That is the good thing with the Phat Box. You try new things and colours.



Beim Bambusgarn war es der Glanz, der mir nicht aus dem Kopf wollte, bis ich mir am Samstag meine Mandala-Goldingspindel geschnappt und losgelegt habe. Auch hier wird wohl das Ganze mit einer weißen Wolle verzwirnt, aber diesesmal muss ich Merino selber spinnen. Oder vielleicht bleibt es auch so, wie es ist, und wird eine Borte.

With the bamboo the sheen got me hooked. I grabbed my Golding Mandala spindle on Saturday and gave it a try. Great roving, great colour. Maybe I will ply that with some -again- white merino roving I have not spun up yet. Or maybe I use it as a single thread for a small edging.

Moroccan Days & Spinnen dazwischen / Moroccan Days & Spinning in between

Moroccan Days geht langsam aber stetig voran. Am Wochenende War ich mit dem Hinweis von Mystic Light fertig, konnte aber an Moroccan Days nicht weiterstricken, weil ich zwischendrin auf die Idee gekommen bin, die Mittelperle der in rosa Miyukiperlen geplanten Diamanten durch eine größere cremefarbene zu ersetzen. Perlen bestellt und gewartet. Gestern kamen sie dann. Solange hatte ich Days-technisch eine Durststrecke. Was tun? Einen Schlapphut häkeln und spinnen.

Moroccan Days evolves slowly but surely. I finished the 2nd Mystic Light clue last weekend and could not go on with Moroccan Days because last week I had the idea of exchanging the center bead of the pink Miyuki bead diamonds with a bigger cream one. I ordered and the parcel arrived not until yesterday. What did I do in the meantime? Crocheting a hat and some spinning.

Spinnen / Spinning

Secret of the Stole ist in der Warteschleife. Habe z.Zt. etwas Stress und bin, wenn ich zu Hause bin, so platt, dass ich nur noch wenige Reihen schaffe. Da noch ein Geburtstagsgeschenk in der Pipeline ist, hat dieses Vorrang. Seit einiger Zeit plagt mich der Wunsch Spinnen zu lernen. Für den Sommer hatte ich mich auf einer historischen Burg zu einem Spinn- und Färbekurs angemeldet, der dann aber leider ausfiel. Im neuen Jahr werde ich das wieder dort angehen, in der Hoffnung, dass es diesesmal klappt.

Vorher hatte ich mir schon ein Spindelset aus einer Lernspindel und einer Mittelalter-Tonspindel mit etwas kardierter Rohwolle besorgt und geprobt. Ich war nicht sooo überzeugt von meinen Künsten, hatte aber Spaß dabei. Lange blieb das Set nicht genutzt liegen...zu lange. Vor ein paar Tagen habe ich wieder gespindelt und dann von der großen Spindel die Wolle auf eine "Mess-"Pappe gespannt. Dann kam die Tonspindel, die eindeutig dünneres Garn zu produzieren hilft. Ich komme mit ihr recht gut klar...meine Katzen auch :-D Affentanz um die Spindel. Hier sind die ersten Ergebnisse:

Secret of the Stole is on hold. I have little bit of stress these days. Sometimes when I am at home I am just able to knit a couple of rows (sometimes not a single row - I am too tired). And there is a birthday present with higher priority. Well, for some time now I have thoughts about spinning my own yarn. Last summer I planned to take part in a spinning and dying class at a medieval castle and what happened? The class was skipped -unfortunately. The upcoming year I will try it again.

Just before the class I bought a spindle set with a big beginner spindle and a small medieval clay spindle - all bottom whorl - with some roving and practised. I was not very convinced about my outcome but it was a pleasure to work with the tools. Then I had no time for it and I put the stuff aside..until a couple of days ago when I thought this is the real activity against stress syndrom :-D..and it is. Yesterday I wound the yarn from the big spindle on a measuring cardboard and tried the medieval spindle for the first time. It produces finer yarn and is a pleasure to work with...also for my cats. We all do a crazy dance around, I try to keep them away and they chase me :-D. These are the first results:

Spindelitis / Spindlitis

Ok, also hier ist eines meiner "ich will das unbedingt probieren und alles selbermachen"-Experimente. Ich will mit der Handspindel meine Wolle spinnen. Und da bei mir so etwas sofort in Angriff genommen wird, habe ich mir vor knapp 2 !!! Monaten ein Handspindelset mit Kardenband bestellt. Ich glaube, ich habe vielleicht zusammengenommen 3 Stunden damit gearbeitet und gaaanz wenig Wolle gesponnen. Dann bin ich wieder nahtlos zu meinem Strickzeug übergegangen :-D. Nicht, weil es mit nicht gefallen hätte, aber es dauert halt etwas, wie das bei jedem Anfang so ist. Wenn ich mal weniger Strickzeug habe (guter Witz), dann muss ich damit beschäftigen. Ich würde auch gerne einmal jemandem, der das kann, über die Schulter gucken, aber das ist nicht einfach. Wenn ich Glück habe, wird es hier in der Nähe auf einer Burg demnächst einen Spinn- und Färbekurs geben. Und dann folgt das Spinnrad!!!! ;-)

Well, here you see one of my 'I definitely have to try that and make everything myself'-experiments. I would like to spin yarn with my drop spindle. And because everything I like to do I want to do immediately I bought a bottom-whirl drop spindle set with some roving around 2 !!! months ago. I think I have spun with my one big spindle not more than 3 hours before getting back to my knitting :-D It is not that I do not like spinning but as always when starting something new it takes a little bit of time to work things out. I think when I have fewer projects to knit (good joke) I have to deal with it again. I also would like to watch somebody performing it but that is not easy. I might have some luck and they will give a spinning and dying class at an old castle close by here. And then a spinning wheel!!! ;-)
